Grammar Made Easy TOPICS:
Nouns, plurals, simple verbs and tenses, verb forms, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, sentences, phrases, clauses.
School Library Journal: Gr. 4-8--Grammar Made Easy uses an engaging game show format to teach students about various topics in grammar. A main menu screen offers several options for users. Students can click on one of seven broad topics, each of which has specific areas of focus. "Nouns" focuses on common, proper, abstract, and plural nouns. "Verb Forms" covers infinitive and imperative forms, verbs and objects, and active and passive verbs. "Simple Verbs & Tenses" teaches present, past, and future tenses, as well as person and agreement. "Adjectives & Adverbs" compares the two types of descriptive word forms. "Pronouns & Prepositions" covers each word form, as well as relative pronouns. "Sentences" focuses on phrases and clauses and simple and complex sentences. "Standard English" includes subject/verb agreement, negatives, slang, and dialect. Once students select a particular topic, they take a diagnostic pretest to determine their knowledge in each area. Mike McGee, the animated host, tells students if their answers are right or wrong and explains why. After completing the pretest, the program provides a customized tutorial on areas in which students had difficulty. Upon completing the tutorial, users repeat the quiz to correct mistakes. Action buttons allow for navigation throughout the program. There are also buttons to fast-forward or rewind segments. A help button appears onscreen. Installation is easy. In the "Teacher's Section," instructors can view individual student progress reports. This program would be a fun alternative to help students learn the basics of grammar.--SLJ 10-14 Win 95
